This time a few years ago we were in almost the exact same position in terms of needing a player who can make right decisions in the final third. Arsene Wenger had options. We needed a ruthless striker, a bit like we do now until Eduardo gets back. Jermaine Defoe was for sale at West Ham for £7m, while Jose Antonio Reyes was for sale at 16m Euros at Seville. For me it was like xmas all over again, I had waited for Arsenal to sign Defoe from his early days at West Ham. He's the closest thing to Ian Wright I had ever seen, he guaranteed you goals, no matter what. Wenger even teased me, "Defoe is one of the targets, yes" he said famously, I'll never forget it, I thought it was about to happen...The next day I'm on a tube back from Uni reading the back of the evening standard saying "Arsenal sign Spanish Wonder boy Reyes"I was gutted. I knew the Defoe deal was dead in the water. I tried to remain positive because of Reyes's potential and talent, but a few days into his Arsenal career, he was unhappy, and it was only going to end one way. A major gamble. I don't blame Wenger for attempting to sign one of the best talents in world football though, I never will...but I would've loved the new Wrighty at Arsenal. To make matters worse - we all know where Defoe went, and for almost half the price we paid for Reyes - sickening. Lightning seems to be striking twice in this window. Arshavin isn't proven in the premiership. Though he is one of the biggest talents in world football. He might set the premiership alight, but we don't know that yet. Defoe was available for the same price at pompey. We might not be creating as much as we used to, but we're still getting a good amount of goal scoring chances per game which are not being taken, it's not rocket science it's the difference, and the reason why I cannot WAIT for Eduardo's return. CANNOT WAIT. Ade and Bendtner aren't doing it at the mo, and with Van Persie playing Godlike football he needs a partner to reciprocate. He is now showing signs of emulating Bergkamp and it's quite frankly scary. But Bergkamp had great strikers to play off, Wrighty, Anelka, Henry. Van Persie has Ade...and sometimes Bendtner...get outta here. No comparison, and a big reason why we didn't win the league last year and are suffering this. Defoe would've been the safer option than Arshavin in my view, but I can see why Wenger didn't go for him, with Eduardo just around the corner, so this time around I guess it makes sense. I just hope Arshavin can deliver for us because he is a fantastic footballer. Wenger says his primary reasons for wanting him are the fact he could go past players, and he can, but for how long. Never played in the prem and 27, I say at 29 he could start feeling it in the legs. If he wanted a direct player who could add a burst of pace to the midfield and burn past players, ala Walcott, then N'zogbia at a cheaper price and a lot younger wouldve been a touch more feasible, even though Arshavin has a wider array of qualities. I knew we'd miss Walcott, a lot of Arsenal fans gunned me down for saying how much of a big miss he would be. Him and Clichy are the ONLY ones who have that penetrating pace and directness while the rest would be playing picnic park football in the middle of the park. Walcott is a huge, HUGE player for us and now we see just how badly we need him. It looks like the Russian's on his way though. Let's hope he comes up with the goods.
