Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger seem's to think the club have taken a real step forward this season, taking heart from two major semi finals. On first look it does look an improvement, but there is certainly more to it than meets the eye. In the FA Cup we came up against Plymouth, Cardiff, Burnley and Hull. Beating those teams comfortably (although struggling somewhat at home against Hull) is expected of any Arsenal side, period. Then coming up against a top side in chelsea, we were undone, exposed, never threatened, and never had a prayer. Where's the step forward here? Nowhere. The bottom line is our FA Cup success has been masked by an extremely lucky run of playing lower league sides. FACT.Onto the Champions League. We are without doubt a European side more than a Premierhip outfit, so it makes sense that without teams flying at us at pace, teams letting us come on to them - we will hurt teams, and we did. We play at an extremely slow pace, we struggle to keep up with premiership teams, fact. Therefore Arsenal beating the likes of Villareal and Roma (although that again could've gone either way, we were shocking in the 2nd leg and could've easily gone out in the 2nd round) should be a formality. Coming up against Man Utd, again, never had a prayer, never threatened, and were exposed both on an attacking and defensive level. So lets think about it this way. Lets say we came up against a team like Villa or Fulham in the 3rd round of the FA Cup (to whom we lost convincingly in the league), let alone Chelsea and had gone out. Let's also say we didnt get lucky with a shocking performance and quite frankly poor penalties in Rome and had gone out in the 2nd round. Two things that could've so easily happened, where would the improvement be there? The fact is regardless of this unbeaten run stemmed from a series of 0-0's, we struggled to make fourth this season and that's the bottom line. I trust Wenger to get things right and sign the right players this summer, but saying we've made a big step forward is wrong, and shouldn't fool Arsenal fans, we all know we've taken a huge step back and are nowhere near as good as we were last year.
