Arsenal Target Slipping Away To Spurs

According to Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, his side are close to signing Ajax center back Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen has been impressive throughout the campaign at Ajax, and managed to impress up to five Barclays Premier League clubs that were interested in his signature. One of the five was Arsenal, and the Gunners had a good chance of signing the defender, since they have another Belgium international in Thomas Vermaelen.
The Sun quoted the Dutch midfielder saying, “Spurs asked me about him. If he’s sensible, he will opt to join us.”
Further, Sunday People quoted him saying, “I hope Jan comes to Tottenham.
“As far as I know the deal is close to being done.”
