Does this midfield maestro deserve an improved deal?

We’ve heard so much talk about extending the contracts of players. Of course the ones who are coming to the end of their respective ones should be top priority, but the outstanding performers equally deserve something extra for their displays.
A good example would be Mikel Arteta. When he signed for us last season from Everton for £10 million he took a £10k pay cut when he agreed a four-year deal worth £60k-a-week.
