I read that one of the rags shed 200 jobs last week amongst the writing staff which is another nail in the coffin of the traditional newspaper business model. Do I feel sympathy for the people who lost their jobs? Of course I do. Am I surprised? Definitely not.
If you continue to target the lowest common denominator when printing news, you’re never going to garner any sort of loyalty. The John Terry saga represented a surge in newspaper sales which encouraged newspapers to believe that toilet news was the way to higher sales. For me, that view is far too black and white. You’ll get a spike in sales because people are curious, but does that news story command loyalty? No… ...
