The Gunners had been strongly linked with West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame all month, but a move never materialised despite late rumours yesterday evening that his £3.5million minimum release fee clause had been met by an unnamed club. These reports were later denied altogether by West Ham.
Diame would make sense, given the strength of the rumours, but Wenger’s words on the matter on Arsenal.com don’t exactly point to the Senegal international.
“We were close to one more signature. It did not happen because of the desire of the clubs to sell or not sell. It is only linked with that. It was not a money problem, it was more a desire from other clubs to keep their players.”
